Hello there, I am Jess.
My origin story goes a little bit like this…
My name is Jess. I am an individual captivated by many topics and hobbies, especially yoga, reading, writing, cooking, and taking adventures all around the world.
Welcome to this little nook on the web where you will find the portal to my work as an integrative mind-body therapist, nervous system educator, and certified yoga therapist.
I currently provide services through Telehealth so I can work with people from all over the world! I also work with individuals around Orange County, NY (ie. near Warwick, Vernon, Greenwood Lake, Monroe, & Tuxedo).
I completed my formal master’s education for this work at Maryland University of Integrative Health in Laurel, MD this July of 2023, where I received a Master’s of Science in Yoga Therapy, as well as my yoga therapy certification (C-IAYT) and 500 hour registered yoga teacher certification.
I have had the opportunity to work in a clinical environment there where I applied these therapeutic techniques and saw first hand how a therapeutic relationship coupled with specialized movement education and expertise can help people manage their stress response more effectively and as a result, improve their confidence, self-image, and capacity to cope with distress/anxiety. I noticed this work to be especially effective for those with a history of trauma, PTSD/C-PTSD, mental health challenges, and chronic pain.
I believe in the power of education and that building a solid foundation of understanding of your body and nervous system can lessen the fear around bodily sensations that may arise due to excess stress.
I also know first-hand and deeply understand the great impact this work can have when practiced consistently. I’m here because I’ve been there.
For most of my young life, I have experienced increased levels of anxiety and panic which started to seriously effect more of my overall self-esteem and perspective of myself much of my collegiate life.
While I was able to cope with a low-level degree of high-functioning anxiety through college, it really started to effect me when I started to be unable to sleep multiple nights in a row and I developed multiple conditions worsened by stress (ie. GERD, orthorexia, panic disorder, PMDD (a type of major depressive disorder brought on around the time of one’s menses), and adjustment disorder (with depersonalization/derealization episodes).
There were days I felt so confused and overwhelmed because of the cloud of uncertainty and fear that consumed me. I had never formally learned about the nervous system at the height of all of these conditions, but I had an intuitive knowing that my body was trying to tell me something. My body was trying to get my attention through all these stressful symptoms and anxiety-provoking experiences. If you are at a point in your life where you are at the height of suddenly intense conditions, there is hope. I am here to help and support you. There are also many professionals I can refer if you are in search of effective healthcare providers.
Over time, I started to dive deep into understanding the central nervous system and autonomic nervous system. I started to see awesome therapists and specialists, but something I could hardly find were trained professionals able to understand how the mind and body are connected and that anxiety can be experienced in a very physical way.
I do not discount any type of modality and believe true healing takes place at the intersections of care where multiple perspectives can be held at once to deliver true patient-centered and widely-informed care from multiple disciplines (ie. ranging from pharmacological models, to allopathic medicine disciplines/specialties, to eastern/indigenous wisdom traditions, complementary practices like chiropractic care and more including the diverse range of evidence-informed yogic/mind-body techniques available).
I dove into deep work and studies, and I started to learn about specific types of movement and how we can influence our stress response by engaging in practices that either meet your stress/anxiety where it is or in practices that can facilitate deep rest to encourage your body to regulate states of over activation. All of these practices I began to understand were effecting my physiology and biology in a specific way, and it showed!
As I applied the techniques and movement practices daily, things were changing in my body. Over a period of several months of consistent therapeutic yoga coupled with therapy, certain symptoms were decreasing or down-right ceasing to exist! Fast-forward a few years later…
Over time and now, I no longer experience overstimulation to the degree I once did, I no longer experience insomnia most nights, nor debilitating anxiety that prevented me from leaving my house or traveling, my menstrual cycle returned after being gone for almost a year, and my perspective of life and mood feel more grounded and open to explore with curiosity more aspects of being alive than ever before. Probably one of the most important aspects of change that I have noticed to this day is that I can allow myself to rest when I need it instead of pushing through the needs of my body and I can push myself and know I will be sustained by the deep well of courage and trust that centers me to the core of my being.
Doing this work doesn't take away your range of human emotions, instead it brings you in touch with a deep recognition of your emotions/beliefs that remind you it is okay to be human and to feel things. So while I may experience anxiety and stress and even some sleepless nights, the excessive load that once kept me frozen and unable to cope and make decisions, no longer effects me because of work I did to increase my capacity to be with stress in my body. And you can too.
I learned that when we can increase our ability to regulate our stress response, we can truly change the way we engage in our life in a more meaningful and purposeful way.
You don’t have to believe that stress and anxiety controls your life, you have the agency to choose how you breathe and how you move. It starts with bringing awareness to these aspects of you first and then working with your capacity where you are.
I’d love to be a part of your evolution and I am eager to get to apply this unique integrative lens that combines multiple modalities through a compassionate trauma-informed lens.
I currently work alongside other health professionals and with individuals as a part of their health care team. In this way, I can ensure the person I am working with is well taken care of and that every aspect of their health encourages the person to feel safe and held in their experience.
We are multi-dimensional beings with multiple aspects of ourselves: a physical body, an energetic body, a mental body, a wisdom body, and a bliss body that connects us to a sense of meaning and deep trust. This work explores all aspects of your being to help you live a life that feels balanced and true to you.
I cannot wait to see where this work leads you, welcome and many blessings to you on your journey.
With Love & Care,
Jessica D. Buck
